Advanced search observations
Our assignment was to learn how to use Advanced search. We were given a list of words to type into the query box, and then to record the number of hits.
start Narrow
Atlantis
When we searched the word Atlantis 41,900,000 web pages showed up.
When we searched Atlantis continent and wrote shuttle, film, movie in ‘unwanted words’, only 18,200,000 web pages showed up.
Waterbury
When we wrote Waterbury and wrote Vermont VT in ‘one or more of these words’ and when we wrote Connecticut CT in ‘any of these unwanted words’ only 1,650,000 web pages were searched.
Advanced search was used to search the above. We noticed that the more specific we made our searches the better quality and fewer web pages showed up. Unneeded information was eliminated because of the advanced search.
find Exact phrases
When we searched ‘San Diego State University’, 4,720,000 web pages showed up.
When we searched San Diego State University in ‘exact word or phrase’, 1,230,000 web pages showed up.
When we searched Bill 602P in ‘exact word or phrase’, only 120 web pages showed up.
when we searched We know he has weapons of mass destruction in ‘exact word or phrase’, only 30 web pages showed up.
When we searched demonstrating genuine leadership in ‘exact word or phrase’, only 94 web pages showed up.
Our next task (above) was to type in different words in ‘exact word or phrase’ box, and record how many web pages showed up. We noticed that when we used exact phrases, more specific and less web pages showed up.
Trim back the url
For example, the website ‘http://www.longwood.k12.ny.us/wmi/wq/collin/index.html’ could not be found. We trimmed the url by deleting every unnecessary words such as wmi/wq/collin/index.html. After we trimmed it, we reached the home page of the site.
After we found the home site, we searched in the site for Shakespeare. By searching at the real home site, we found that ‘http://www.longwood.k12.ny.us/wq/shakequest/Pages/index.htm’ was the site that could be found.
look for Similar pages
When we searched www.ssischool.org on ‘find pages similar to the page’, we had 27 results about other schools in vietnam and other information.
When we searched www.ssischool.org on ‘find pages that links to the page’, we had 4 web pages that showed up.
